By the sweet bi and bi Three resources on bisexuality

The Bisexual Option By Fritz Klein

Harrington Park, $17.95 paperback

Bi Any Other Name

Bisexual People Speak Out Edited by Loraine Hutchins and Lani Kaahumanu Alyson Books, $12.95 paperback

The Bisexual Resource Guide Edited by Robyn Ochs. Bisexual Resource Center, $12.95 by Megan T. Wilson

With the rise in popularity of bisexual singer Skott Freedman, recently profiled in Billboard magazine, and the addition of Transgender/Bisexuality as a category in this year's Lambda Literary Awards, it is clear that the gay community is beginning to move past its "bi-phobia." As the community at large looks more closely at the lives of bisexuals, and bisexuals learn more about themselves and those who came before, the study of these issues becomes more and more important. These three books can aid in this examination.

The Bisexual Option, first published in 1993, is still, by far, the most thorough examination of the issue.

Fritz Klein is today's most prominent author dealing with bisexual issues. A psychiatrist, he writes with a clinical tone that may be difficult reading for those unfamiliar with psychological jargon. But the points he makes are clear and concise.

Klein, the keynote speaker at the 2000 BECAUSE national conference on bisexuality, infuses his writing with personal stories of friends and clients who come to him to

discuss bisexual orientation issues. The anecdotes give a personal feeling to a book that could otherwise be detached and scientific. Klein's writing is warm and compassionate, full of understanding and indignation at the silence on bisexuality in the gay and straight communities. This book is required reading for anyone seeking to understand the psychological and emotional basis of their own bisexuality, or the bisexuality of a friend or partner.

For a bisexual person looking for someone to tell them their own story, Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out is the book. In a patchwork of short essays, poems, interviews and letters, the lives and loves of 75 drastically different bisexual people come to life and reach out to their readers.

These testimonials bear the truth of bisexuality with a great balance of humor (Ellen Terris' "My Life as a Lesbian-Identified Bisexual Fag Hag"), pride (Roland Glenn's "Proud Father of a Bisexual Son"), healing (Leonard Tirado's "Reclaiming Heart and Mind") and intellectualism (Lenore Norrgard's "The Fine Art of Labeling: The Convergence of Anarchism, Feminism and Bisexuality.").

This collection shows perhaps the most comprehensive gallery of the faces of bisexuality. Reading it can take someone on a truly inspiring journey.

According to its web site, The Bisexual Resource Guide contains listings of more than 2,100 bi and les-bi-gay groups in 55 countries and across the U.S. Guides to films,

books, merchandise and other resources are included. The editor, Robyn Ochs, is a wellknown bisexual author and speaker. It comes very highly recommended.
